| Supermarine Stranraer |
| A creation of R.J. Mitchell of Spitfire fame,
the Supermarine Stranraer was the last in a series
of flying boats of biplane construction. It was
built for the RAF and, subsequently, the RCAF. It
saw service in the early part of World War II,
primarily on coastal patrol duties. At the cessation
of hostilities a number of the Canadian aircraft
were purchased by a B.C. airline. They became the
butt of many jokes due their profusion of wires and
struts; nevertheless they operated successfully for
a number of years, the last one being retired in
1957. The machine shown here, depicted in RCAF
livery, is lying in one of the many fiords
describing British Columbia's rugged west coast. |
