| DH88 Comet |
| The DH88 Comet, manufactured by the DeHavilland
Aircraft Company, was designed specifically to
answer Britain’s call for a challenger in the 1934
Macpherson Robertson Trophy Air Race from England to
Australia. The machine shown here, G-ACSS, flown by
Charles Scott and Thomas Campbell-Black and
christened Grosvenor House, won the race. This scene
depicts them departing the island of East Timor at
dusk, beginning a perilous crossing of the
shark-infested Timor Sea enroute to Darwin. The
sleek lines and streamlining of the Comet were
incorporated in it’s successor, the famous DH98
Mosquito, of World War Two fame. |
